5 New York City Date Night Ideas for Parents

Posted by Ria, 09 Mar

Many couples fulfill the mother and father roles virtually every hour of every day. Healthy couples, however, make it a point to be husband and wife or girlfriend and boyfriend one day per per week, and enjoy each other's company without interruption. If this sounds like you and your significant other, or you are thinking of implementing a date night, New York City is the largest urban municipality in the world with a plethora of activities to choose from. It can be an overwhelming task trying to figure out where to go in a city this size, so here are five ideas to consider that aren't overly-touristy or expensive.

Paint Along

Find your soulmate on InterracialDatingCentral

Located at 127 East 27th Street, Paint Along is a great place for a date night. It has two-hour painting classes and encouraging instructors who will make the worst artist in the world feel like Pablo Picasso. It's also a BYOB venue, so you can have a few glasses of your favorite wine to break down some of the pre-painting jitters.

Reservations should be made several weeks in advance on the company website. The best part is the calendar will show what the specific painting will be for that night. Two hour classes cost $45 per person, and three hour classes are $55. The instructors will encourage you to have fun, while also emphasizing the establishment is not a bar. Rowdy, drunken behavior can get you kicked out, so definitely pace yourselves in that regard.

Broadway Show

You become an official New Yorker once you see the Lion King, Phantom of the Opera or some other classic Broadway play live. You can browse Broadway productions online for show times and locations and to buy tickets.

First time Broadway goers just need to follow a few rules of thumb to enjoy the experience. Make sure you arrive at least a half hour early. The Theater District is easily accessible by subway or you can take a taxi. Use the restroom before the show because theaters are notorious for having small restrooms with long lines. Turn your cell phones completely off (not to vibrate), and keep quiet throughout the show.

Smorgasburg

The perfect Saturday or Sunday afternoon date can combine culture and lunch at Smorgasburg. More than 100 food vendors gather at 27 North 6th Street in the Williamsburg neighborhood to form a de-facto outdoor food court. The event is held indoors during the winter months at 1000 Dean Street in Crown Heights.

The key is to try foods you've never had before and experience different cultures and foods. Fried anchovies, brisket sandwiches and chai ice cream are just a few unique options. You might even want to skip breakfast to make sure you have enough room to sample all the tasty treats.

Rooftop Films

The drive-in used to be the only venue in town to experience outdoor movie watching. But then Rooftop Films took it a step further by showing indie flicks in unconventional locations. The nonprofit launched in 1997 and has since become well-respected internationally for world premieres of independent films. Venues can range from rooftops, to the undersides of bridges, to large industrial spaces. Live music is commonly part of the pre-show entertainment and sponsored after-parties are not uncommon.

Loeb Boathouse

Located on the Upper East Side right on Central Park Lake, The Loeb Boathouse provides one of the most romantic settings a couple could ask for. They have 100 rowboats to rent for only $15 per hour, and you can spend the afternoon rowing across Central Park's largest body of water. Then, enjoy dinner at the Lakeside Restaurant, or spend the rest of your evening at the Outside Bar. It's best to make a reservation because it gets busy in the spring and summer.
