5 tips for writing a profile that will grab his attention

So you’ve taken your time choosing the photos that show you in your best light; the ones showing you at your happiest and most radiant, doing the things you love and generally looking like a great catch. It’s all about the pictures, right? Do men even read the profile?

The answer is a resounding yes! Not all men, admittedly (as anyone who’s spent even a few hours on a dating site will know), but for the intelligent, discerning men you likely want to attract, a good written profile is essential. So let’s have a look at some top tips for writing a dating profile that will make you stand out from the crowd and take you one step closer to finding Mr Right.

  • Keep it short and sweetA good profile should hook the reader early on and leave them wanting to know more. But ideally shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to read. The average man has a short attention span and a limited amount of time to spend reading about any one person. A few carefully chosen paragraphs is all you need to show him you are the kind of interesting, entertaining woman that he will want to contact.
  • Ditch the clichésDo you like walks on the beach? Nights out with friends or cozy nights in with a bottle of wine and a DVD? Do you love to travel and laughing until it hurts? Chances are you do, but your goal in writing a winning profile is to differentiate yourself – not write a few paragraphs that scream “I’M JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!”

To sound like an individual rather than a cliché, all you need is a bit of detail.

Rather than saying you like travelling, try to paint a picture of the kind of things you like to do on your trips away; “I love going to places a little off the beaten track. On my last vacation to Eastern Europe I got to walk along beaches unspoilt by tourism and eat the kind of food I’d expect from an expensive restaurant for a fraction of the price. If you know of any hidden gems a little closer to home, I’d love to hear from you!”

  • Make it easy for him to strike up a conversation

Asking a strategic question or making an appeal for specific information is a great way to persuade a male reader to contact you. This tactic is known as “profile bait” as it draws someone to it and makes it more likely they will “bite”, i.e. message you. And the easier it is for men to message you, the more likely they are to do it. Did you notice the profile bait in my tip 2 example above?

  • Keep it positive

No-one wants to be around someone who’s always complaining in real life so why would it be any different online? Yes, your gripes with online dating or men in general might be entirely justified but they’re not going to do you any favors in attracting the kind of man you want to be with. So ditch the negativity and make sure you come across as someone who sees the good in life.

  • Be the fun, adventurous woman with a zest for life that every man is drawn to.If you want to persuade a man not only to message you but also to meet you and maybe even think about committing to you, then make sure you communicate the fact that you see your future as being full of excitement and adventure. Men fear that settling down will make their lives dull and monotonous and are looking for someone exciting; make it clear you have big plans; tell him your goals and ambitions and talk about all the awesome things you’re still planning to do.
