Why does she expect better treatment?

Posted by Ria, 26 Mar

An Asian woman and her Caucasian fiance are walking toward a French restaurant when a dude blurts out “Chink lover”!. Much as the insult was directed at her fiance, she gets so offended that she starts yelling after the dude calling him lonely and a loser.

A few months later, on a trip to Thailand with her fiance, this same woman engages in some ‘harmless’ fun in a game of spotting what they dubbed “‘odd couples’: tall, gangly foreigners with tiny Thai women.” Privately, she refrained from calling it “exploitation” to "she's doing what she needs to survive, and he's finding comfort the only way he can." She was doing the same judging most people do whenever they see an interracial couple walk by.

Find your soulmate on InterracialDatingCentral

“In public, I spoke loudly in English and wore my Tevas and other backpacking garb in an attempt to appear American and not as someone's paid consort,” she says. But even in Thailand, she was “… lumped together with the prostitutes and the girlfriends who came with a fee. Maybe that's what bothered me so much about the jerk on the street -- his implication that all Asian women were somehow lower than white men. That only women with desperate financial need and lonely men would cross the color line,” she adds.

She finishes off by saying she doesn’t want to be grouped with other people who look like her.

Someone please explain this: Why is this bothering her when she was also privately prejudicial against the ‘odd couples’ in Thailand? If she assumed every tiny Thai woman with a tall foreigner was a prostitute, why does she expect other people to treat her any different?

IF, I and I stress the word "IF" this occurred, neither of these individuals is better than the other with regards to stereotyping. Initially when I read this article, I thought this story was intentionally fabricated to invoke or spark a discussion. Perhaps the author felt the need to gain a better perspective on Asian women/dating experiences of racism? Who knows? I would also submit that hopefully in the near months to come, the "diversification" factor would kick into the minds/brains behind the subject topics. Most have been (in my opinion) negatively geared towards black/white issues or Asian/white issues. Rarely have I witnessed any articles about Jewish relations, Mexican, Latino, Persian, or other cultures. Brandonhugs, you brought out some good points on your post dated 04/09/09. Miri2008 I appreciate some of the things you mentioned in your post. Take Care everyone!!

@lagbaja61 excuse me if I cannot sympathize with you as I see men of European descent around me every day holding positions of authority which they do not have the formal educational qualifications for, while women and ethnic minorities who have Bachelor's and even Master's degrees and much experience are not even remotely considered for promotion. I work in a professional a technical environment and I have been shocked as I discover some of my 'white' male peers are just now in the process of working on initial formal professional qualifications and degrees, and have been actively holding positions which I just cannot fathom how they would have come into without the appropriate educational qualifications other than having being given the 'good old boys' network nod. So I am sorry, that as all people begin to demand fair and equitable treatment and are working hard to be educated and prepared to take on key positions and work functions that it is posing a challenge for some who feel entitled. And many ethnic minorities can tell you that many of the 'programs' of which you speak are good PR propaganda to soothe some consciences and obviously serve as handy tools for such references as you have made here in this blog, but what are the stats on the accessibility, usefulness, or effectiveness of any of these 'programs' which you appear convinced are here to coddle ethnic minorities while you are out in the cold. I have never asked anyone for any favors. I'll stand toe to toe with you. Bring it! I paid for my Bachelors degree on my own with not a penny from anyone - have paid back all those student loans. Am a hair's breath away from completing my Master's - again, on no one's dimes but my own. You have any clue how many minority people sacrifice, juggle work and home obligations just to push forward and gain skills and knowledge to take away the reasons that we are told 'no' and pushed to the back of the line? Man! this is the first comment from a blogger that's really ticked me off!!! Get educated, and get in line with everyone else!! I'm only sorry that the blog is so old that you'll probably not see this comment. But, it will have to be enough that my comment will be here for the record as other bloggers happen upon this thread.

to NOPLAYER, I agree 100&. And I also know that any white male that makes a statement like Brian did (which lagbaja61 wholeheartedly agreed to) when he said "everything in society today is geared to take away white male power in all forms"..well, that can only be seen as a paranoid racist statement. Unfortunately, many white men are upset that affirmative action programs are trying to change 400 years of racial injustice and so they want to abolish even the small progress that has been made. Even worse, some of those same white men date interracially and come onto sites like this one. And to "homesteader", I know u enjoy writing rambling, off topic, sometimes incoherent comments all over these blogs, but can u please limit them to maybe just one a day? Because some people might not enjoy seeing email notices about new comments to this blog, and then having to say "oh, it's THAT guy again". I know I speak for the majority of us when I say that. Thank u for your attention to this matter.

lagbaja61 discrimination hurts everyone and the threat is always there. I learned a few years back that a threat only has power over you if you're vulnerable to that threat. The color of my skin, where I live, my income and a few other factors may make me a target for those who'd choose to discriminate against me but only my ignorance can make me vulnerable. If you or other white males feel that power is being taking away from you, then you had no power from the start. Self-empowerment comes from within, not from what another man or society was given you. If some man giving you a paycheck every two weeks, allowing you to live here or there, or attend this or that university gives you your sense of power, the minute he takes those things away from you, there goes your sense of power. I use the term "sense of power" because it was not really power in the first place, it was privilege. PRIVILEGES are given and they're taken away but SELF-EMPOWERMENT, no man or system can give you or take from you. I cant speak on the sistuation in England, I don't live there but in America, white males for at least 400 years have been the ones with the power and now some feel that it's being taking from them. Power is one of those things that only has effect to the degree that people are willing to yield or submit to it! Women and non-whites are finding ways to em-power themselves and use the influence that comes with that power to gain advantage for themselves and secure a future where they can have control over what goes on and not leave that in the hands of a select few.

The story that you tell is very familiar & told by men & women from various marginalised groups within societies! Discrimination does suck & you and millions of others are feeling it! I do not need to walk in your shoes because I don't expect anyone to walk in mine! I'm just getting on with it!

Jacx - since you can't empathise, let explain. Brain wrote not just of race but of gender issues, and Brian is right, because I have encountered many white 'straight' males who consider they have become fair game to be abused and discriminated against. In fact, a trades union did a survey and found a huge percentage of white males felt they had been discriminated against at work. And felt they had no recourse of complaint. When white males cry foul it is perceived as being we want a return of segregation (never was legal in England by the way), a return to jobs for the boys, of being arrogant and insulting to everyone outside of our class and colour, that any underachievement is due to our own failings, and our complaints are dismissed to the extent few of us bother to make them. And your attitude, of lack of understanding and it almost being payback goes to show how correct the white males who feel that way are. But, they put up and shut up. Don't forget we are told to be understanding, tolerant, but are you giving that back? Many feel laws have been skewed against us, not just on grounds of race, but gender. For example, isn't there something wrong when in 99% of child custody cases, custody goes to the woman? We are well used to seeing white males overlooked in media (examples being corporate publications where the images show none or very few white males), and criminalised - London transport recently ran a fare evasion campaign, and in the images used, every single fare evader was white - would they have portrayed any other ethnic group that way? Our Govt runs ad campaigns about fraud of State benefits, and yep, the face of the criminal was white male. Back in the real world, I feel there's an assumption that being a white male means doors have been opened for me. Love to know where. What little I have, I and many others like me got from our own efforts. I came from a council estate (a project in the US). I went to a 'poor' school on it, and came from a 'poor' but loving family. I had no friends in the golf club or on the board of corporations, I had to study, work hard and do what I could. Again, I know this for a fact, the lowest achieving group academically in England are in the official category 'white working class boys' - yet whilst other groups have had programmes and funding targetted to them, this huge group of disadvantaged under achieveing kids has, until recently, been ignored. I have had to apply for every job, no favours given, I had to take the knocks too, I have walked away from many an interview knowing I should get the job, but betting I don't, and I too have felt myself to be unfairly overlooked for jobs. But even that is being further legalised as our Govt is planning yet more laws to discriminate largely against white Males in the workplace. I could on on about media portrayal in movies and TV programmes, racism experienced in our lives (and read on this site) but I think you get my point. So what I am saying, Jacx and others who may not understand, is that the likes of Brian and myself and you can bet millions of others do feel discriminated against, and you have to respect it - even if you don't see it. Because, that is exactly what is demanded of us. I hope you can see there is another side of the coin and as we are all on a multi-racial site it's important to understand how discrimination can affect us all, and is a threat to all of us. Walk a mile in my shoes and all that!

In true life , one worries more about taking care of themselves and their families [ This I feel is correct 0 . Than who is or who is not in power so to speak . Next time We go into a restaurant to dine , I shall be sure to ask if the President and Mrs. Obama had enjoyed their meal there / before we ever sitdown to order a meal . And if there are dirty clothed people from the trades of life dinning there for their hour lunchbreak . We shall enjoy the fact that they were hungry also . As we honor their presence to dine beside us . If we do decide to eat there We will act as grown adults and leave a good tip before exiting . When may I ask is the last time you [ generally speaking ] Ate in a restaurant and all people looked the same / Uniformly dressed , same color outfits , all with clean white sneakers and their hair all done the same ? Did you complain to the Management if some had parted their hair on the wrong side . I do know one thing for sure / I have the Power to say " Thank you , We have Enjoyed our meal and your service was Great " or when departing a transit bus to say " Thank you for the Safe ride "

I am curious about the comments made by Brian (29.03.2009) and lagbaja61 (11.04.2009) and wonder whether their ideas are indicative of current thinking? Is it true that "most people hate white [heterosexual] males...and that everything is geared to take away white male power in all forms (Brian 29.03.2009)?" This might suggest that white men are being emasculated, and if so, by whom? If true, I would imagine that this covert or maybe even overt and purposeful negation of "male whiteness" can only weaken the psyche, and if so, how does it affect the community, parenting, rites of passage, education, and employment? What are 'white' parents telling their children about their future in a nation (assuming that Brian and lagbaja61 are from the US) their founding fathers allegedly helped to build, if the new figures of odium are "white men"? I do not empathize with their comments because I do not know them or how challenging it may be for them, their families and/or their communities to see POWER suddenly feel as though it has little or no currency! Is this evolution? Are the sands of time shifting; have positions changed? If we look at patriarchy per se, I see subtle differences in where the balance of power lies; whether that is with black or white men; although more and more women are pushing through and maximizing their efficacy; albeit on a local level. If power is being extracted from "white heterosexual males", who is siphoning it off and where is it going, unless the declining economy – vise-a-vie male unemployment – is responsible for male emasculation; although I would imagine that patriarchy within the household is unlikely to change. Historically intuitions and legislation has never been geared towards giving women POWER in any form! Women continue to work tirelessly to support themselves and their families and push through ‘male’ hierarchal systems, sexism, misogyny, racism and any other 'ism' that are thrown their way! I am sure that there are many of us who at some point in our lives have felt emasculated, and if anything, I empathize with ALL men as the very nature of our declining economies requires that society redefines what it means to be ‘male’ in the 21st century. Brian and lagbaja61 offered individualized views which may resonate with many men for very different and oppossing reasons! Guys, while you may not get much sympathy regarding your comments, you’re in the right site to definitely learn about resilience and efficacy; which is something that is located within each of us and is not sanctioned by institutions. jac x

ok, here's a couple of comments from my wonderful self :)) I'm a black male that just felt compelled to comment on a few things. First, i think we can all agree that "homesteader" writes like he is a drunken illiterate old guy that needs to take a nap and get back on whatever meds he stopped taking. Next, as far as the topic of this blog goes, I think that an Asian woman would be of course be justified in being upset at being referred to as a "chink", and it would also be reasonable for her to assume that most of the white men walking around with Thai women in Bangkok, are sex tourists, because that is exactly the truth. If anyone doesn't know that evil "sex tourism" is a huge problem in Thailand, then you must be incredibly unaware. I know that the author of this blog article was trying to make a point, but they failed. In related news, Girlsixdiva has a cute pic and is smart. Hee-hee :))

Jabo, was the only one prior to this who mentioned the racial slur in the third line unless I missed one. That was my first thought. When I read, "Much as the insult was directed at her fiance, she gets so offended..." I thought of course she got offended. She was the one referred to by the slur (And how much different would this blog read if the slur began with an "n"?). Then I wondered if this couple was guilty of assumption more than bigotry. Maybe the French restaurant was in the neighborhood of the "stroll". If you are in an area known for prostitution and a scantily clad woman leans in your car window and says, "Hey, Baby, want a date?" you might assume she is working, regardless of her ethnic background. But you could be wrong. She might just be thinking that you would be an interesting dinner companion. The couple may have come up with the term "odd couples" to describe what was clearly a relationship for hire or for ones that only seemed like that to them. Either way it doesn't mean they are bigots. Her other attempts to appear American (she did say talking loudly didn't she?) may have been defenses against any more lewd propositions coming her way from guys who harassed her on the street. Finally, we didn't get to see the whole piece that Ria quotes so we don't know the full context of the story. From what I read, I don't see any reason to hate on the woman for not wanting to be an object of racism. Who does, whether are racist themselves or not.

Marty, I think the issue is not that one percieves th woman as a prostitute. It is a means of using negative terms to try to control women. Mary Magnalene was at one point thought to be a prostitute. Why? I think because the males wanted to lessen her credibility. You are right, one needs to have a strong sense of self.

In order to date or marry inter racially a person must have a strong sense of self. It does not matter to me what people think as long as we know what we are doing in life and as a couple. If I am thought of as a prostitute for dating a Caucasian then so be it. It is their problem not mine. I will not own that thought. I know I am not a prostitute.

I think many may be missing the point of the lesson to be learned here. The problem regarding the statement 'chink lover' is not to degrade asians as much as it is to try to elevate a feeling of superiority by the issuer of the comment. This person thinks that by the nature of his/her race, that they are superior to one of the parties who were together. This is not necessarily a white/asian or white/black thing. There used to be statements similar to this when there were light skinned blacks and darker skinned blacks. In all of these situations, someone puts down another due to differences that really point out the insecurity of that person. A secure, mature and evolved person would not care. Shows the frailty of 'man' and lack of wisdom. In the end, not really spending too much time on the subject not really worth discussion. I say, consider the source.

I never respond to these things for often it leads to a circular firing squad but here goes. The world is a complicated place. Yes people should treat each other like color and race doesnt matter but it does. It codes how we think about identity, culture and politics who is supposedly developed and backward. It doesnt suprise me that a person of color in a relationship with a white person would not wish to be stereotyped and still have seemingly stereotyped views of others. Human beings do think about distinctions between classes and nations. Some do it from an elitist point of view; some do it from wishing to overturn such classifications permanently (going beyond the limits of liberalism)... most do not... Some of the most far reaching radical democratic thinkers (not saying the woman who is the subject of this story here is radical)have married outside their race and just because they think critically about their own race doesnt mean they hate themselves... there would be far less socialists or Pan-Africanists for example if we were to strike out those in interracial relationships. But the point is to pay attention to the content of what people are saying and not insist people stop talking about the race and color problem... yes people of color and whites are individuals (who think differently)...so let's take sides on the basis of what they say NOT who they are.

Similiar actions , in everday life . People are all people in human form . We only see what we want to see . Believe Me there is another way / path to follow . All human beings have a choice .

...once again, there is absolutely no difference between the races. We need to get that into our skulls.

What I see with the OP is that those harsh feelings about other races are okay if she's feeling them (likely cuz she grew up with them), but to have them bounced back at her isn't 'right'. That's pretty typical across the board. Not EVERYBODY feels that way, but a big percentage does....

These blogs are getting really weird. I understand most people hate White Male heterosexuals. Plus everything in society today is geared to take away white male power in all forms. But I wonder why all of these blogs refer only to Asian Women and White Men? Hmmm..... Could it be jealousy?

Sweet roses...I think it's very odd how you pin pointed me out of everyone else here who mentioned the blog needs to be cited? And also where in my comments did I make any judgments against anyone? Sounds like you've got some issues to deal with sweetie.

Thanks, great point of views, this topic should be cited getting out of control girlsixdiva, let us humans not judge people on how they live just let it go and move on, get over it. I do not believe someone can get fun and humor out of degradeing others and themself, (when is this world going to get out of black, white and other races. (Leave it alone not good). Thanks everyone, jah-jah bless.
