Choose sides: Black, White, Asian or Hispanic?

Posted by Leticia, 25 Sep

Just when you thought it was safe to turn on the television again...it looks like reality TV is here to stay. Have you heard about the new season of Survivor? For season #13 of this CBS reality show, the producers have put 20 contestants into four groups. You guessed it...Blacks, Whites, Asians and Hispanics. Will you choose sides? Will this get you to watch? I must admit, I love to see a bad horror movie every once in a while...I'm in.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a big fan of the show Survivor. I'm often trying to escape from my own reality, so submerging myself into a total stranger's reality is not my idea of an entertaining night. However, I must admit that I will be checking out the new season just to see if "my race" is representing me to the fullest and if other races are living up to the stereotypes that we've all come to know and love.

Find your soulmate on InterracialDatingCentral

For example; is the African American Tribe, sleeping late, not doing any work and blaming each for their lack of immunities? Will the Asian Tribe men be resorting to intellect or violence, while their women resort to using sex and seduction to get the upper hand in the competition? How about the Hispanic Tribe? Did they sneak a few extra family members over to the island thinking no one would notice? Are they trading manual labor for extra food? And let us not forget the White Tribe. Well, we all know that they really won't have to do much to win because they are the superior race. And since they are also compassionate, they will allow the Hispanics to work for them, the Asian women to take care of them and the Blacks...well, they'll give them something to complain about.

All joking aside, I really do have mixed feelings about this racial ploy to increase ratings. I'm glad to see that more races are being given the opportunity to appear on television. It will be interesting to see how the five people within the same race are different from one another. More importantly, it will be great for the country to see how other races differ from their stereotypes and have more similar traits than they realize.

What bothers me is the fact that as a nation, we continue to show our insanity, by continuing to do the same thing (put one race against the other), and expect something different to happen. Or maybe we don't. Maybe the powers that be have got this whole thing figured out. If we continue to fight and not trust each other, we'll stay apart and argue over the little things like, "Who's getting all the minimum wage jobs or the high interest loans", instead of coming together and forcing our leaders to do the best for all people, not just the ones with the biggest bankroll.

Putting all my conspiracy theories aside, I do understand that this is just one television show. I also realize that it's for entertainment purposes only. However, not everyone with a television has my sense and sensibility.

Who knows, maybe the show will surprise us all and really focus on how we are all a part of the human race, all God's children. Perhaps it'll embrace our cultural diversity while highlighting our individual similarities...what am I thinking we're talking about TV. Besides, where does it end? Next season do we have the Lawyer Tribe, Doctor Tribe, Pimp Tribe and the Prostitute Tribe? Or do we have the Transgender vs. the homophobe and the Christians vs. the Atheist?

This is Leticia...representing all races!

Leticia, I enjoyed your perspective and commentary but lets be real here, this type of programming is racist and it can lead to no good. The best thing that the viewing audience can do is not tune in to such stupidity. Please remember that boycott is still one of the most effective forms of protests for a voiceless community in a consumer driven society. TURN OFF THE TV!

the producers of this show and others like it all know how to do one thing really well, and that's how to get the best viewing figures. it's down to the viewing public to decide if they are going to allow themselves to be sucked into watching this mindless rubbish. needlees to say, there will be many people who will watch it and not find anything wrong with it. there is enough segregation going on in this world already, and i for one don't need to see it, especially when it's masqueraded in our faces as so called "entertainment".

they have gone from fantastic the first season and down hill since then, they have reached their ultimate low point and I believe they will never be able to make up for this.....they have lost alot of viewers and Survivor will be a thing of the past after this season.

I did notice that the African Americans did not appear to be as physically fit as the Asians and the white people. In fact the two people that the teams sent home so far are the overweight ones.....why are there all lean athletic looking jocks on some team and full bodied or overweight folks on the Black team...just my observation..it would be nice if they had level playing field if you are going to make it a race war...let it be fair...

Just ignorant...Just plain ignorant. Tv has always been a tool, and it has served for good as much as for bad...and this time it's for the bad. YOU KNOW their is going to be some racial tension surfacing. Not simly necessarely because there are different ethnic groups, but because each individual is specialy picked with regards to their personality...firy or outspoken, or blunt and crude. And in the odd sweetheart that will crack and then forced to expose something, somoene they aren't...just plain ignorant! If i may quote my favorite MC, KRS-ONE: "people, don't be mad at the gun...be mad at the conscious that is behind, holding the gun"...that, in this case, being the show producers.

dont see how you can call it racist when there are plenty of shows that put male teams up against female teams(sexism?) and i have seen plenty of shows like family fortunes that put a black family against a white family and nobody screamed racism then, if the people on the show dont have a problem with it why should we? were all people

I watched the second half of what I think might've been the first episode. Aside from the group divisions (which is NOT a minor point), I didn't see anything overtly racist happening on the show. Nonetheless, people with strong prejudices will certainly look at the behaviors of the groups through a very different lens than mine, and are likely to be able to pick things out of the show that will serve to reinforce their racial stereotypes--just as they do in real life. Thus, overall, I don't see this show having any major cultural impact. They got some press over doing a controversial team arrangement, which likely increased viewership. That's all they need. Did anyone see the FX show "Black. White." last season? That was very interesting. I hoped that seeing ostensibly liberal white people behave in such a bumbling fashion around race issues would be helpful for white viewers to see (so that they could decide to do all of that very differently!)

I haven't had much use for broadcast TV for some time and this show hasn't done anything to alter that. Not that I'm an elitist walking a higher path pondering life's mysteries such as "Why are we here?" and "who DID let the dogs out?" but I AM insulted by laugh tracks that tell me what is funny. I'm kind of saddened by these pairings since it seems that America appears to be regressing in general IMHO. But who knows? I try to be open minded...maybe I'll tune in for the Buddhist/Muslim/Christian/Mormon Tabernacle choir edition...

I didn't like the show for the simple fact is that it depicts people picking sides based only on "who" can help them get ahead now. "If you can't help me, I'll move on to someone or something else who will" attitude which I never agreed with. I don't pick my friends based on what they can do for me.

There is no such thing as race as we usually discuss it. All human beings, regardless of how we look, are of one species and one race. That's why we can all breed with one another! The subdivisions we have made over the centuries not only change but are not scientifically valid. It's hard but we truly need to wrap our heads around this concept: Race is not real!!!

I think it's about time too have a show where it really doesn't matter what race you are. This may be the only way we can show people, "Hey this can work". That this can have a positive affect on the people wathcing. After all, we do spend alot of time in front of the tube.

It's garbage, and because it is it goes prime-time. Thats television for you. Why don't networks a "real" reality show. Let's go find out the rich get richer, and poor get screwed. Let's find out why the world doesn't like the U.S. Why is there poverty, racism, and George Bush and nothing is being done about it. Maybe people could actually learn something.

First, survivor is "too white"...now that it's not, ppl have an issue with it. If we want to break down the issue of racism and segregation, let's not let it affect us to a point of "protesting a show". After all, isnt this just giving "them" what they want. "Brush your shoulders off"...who cares!

I have to admit that I'm a reality show addict, and Survivor is my favorite of all. Although I was surprised at the tribes being broken down by ethnicity this season, I find it very interesting as well as being time for the show to be more inclusive. I, for one, enjoy learning about other cultures and found it interesting when the Vietnamese man got rid of a tribemate's headache which he said was a "bad wind" and the means by which he did it. I also watched how the African American men just "took charge" and made the decision about who would go to Exile Island without including the women at all (which I resented and is something that peeves me about some African American men). But, my belief is that we are all of the human race and have more in common than differences. I'm looking forward to the merge when the remaining tribes are integrated to see what the interaction will be like then.

Leticia, I totally agree with you that the producers of this show have found a way to add a whole new audience that probably never watched it before. A friend of mine and I were just discussing this yesterday. You can sure bet that every racious, bigoted (of all races)person that believes their race is far supperior to the other ones is a faithful viewer this year. My friend and I have agreed however to not watch it when we usually do every year because of this overtone to again try and keep all races seperate and battling against one another. I know our 2 votes do not count when it comes to ratings when I am sure we are covered up by new viewers but we still do have a choice on weather to hit that little button or not and we are choosing to watch something else. It seems like we love to take one step forward and 4 back when it comes to interracial relations. Sincerely Dave

This show should emulate that "You are what you do not what you think or say". and thats it. Of course, the stereotypical convos that may occur during the show will probably be highlighted by the producers, which Im sure will instigate bath and bar room hogwash as to the reality of it all. The producers should get what they want with this.

I saw the episode where the Black team lost one of the men and they were down to one man and three women. It was good and I regret not being able to watch any of the newer episodes due to my school and work schedule. May the best team win!
