Interracial Dating... There's more to it than Black & White

Posted by Leticia, 16 Feb

Okay, you've made the conscious decision to be in a relationship with a person of a different race...what does that really mean? If you look up the word...okay, I'll do it. Interracial: "relating to, involving, or representing different races". So what is 'Race'?

Race by definition is "a group of people united or classified together on the basis of common history, nationality, or geographic distribution". So, technically if I, being of African (my race), decent, would hook up with a Haitian, Dominican, or Jamaican; upon first glance, it would look like we're just another black couple. Reality is we would be considered an "interracial couple". Dating interracially isn't just black and white dating. It's Asian and black, Hispanic and white, and the list goes on and on. We are all different and that's beautiful. All races are connected. Our ancestors gave equally to our genetic makeup and we all share common ancestors. But think about it, haven't you dated someone within "your race" with very different family history, beliefs, values, etc? It always amazes me when I hear people preach that we should stay "with our own kind". In order to do that we would truly have to date our own brother and sister and that's just nasty.

You know, with all of the definitions and classifications aside, "multicultural" relationships are just what we needed in today's world of cultural misunderstanding and racial intolerance. Interracial relationships go to the core of what you and I, what we all really want, and that's to be loved and respected. Ignorance is the fuel of intolerance. Multicultural relationships helps eliminates that ignorance and replaces it with respect or at least tolerance. So, since you're here, just know that you're doing good for the world... You've decided to see the beauty in a person of another race and look beyond any cultural differences. You've opened yourself to new thoughts, experiences, and even different ways of life. All for the sake of getting to know who this person really is and hopefully finding love, well at least a new friend. It's our most basic wants and needs that connect us as one race, the human race...

Everything else is just window dressing.

To yickerman, first i will point out absolutely nothing negative has ever happened in my past! its strange how you white people enjoy trying to flip the scrip on others... i had once dated a white girl whom to tell the truth i thought was a black girl at the first time i heard her voice on the phone, she was so into doing and sounding like a black person i must admit she fooled me so much for blind dates! After we decided to meet up i was totally surprised because she came with one of her black girlfriends while i was with my friend i went to greet her friend i was as shame as i was surprise and disappointed but anyway i decided to carry on due to my curiosity so we did for a while but the strange thing was i had absolutely no emotional attachment to the poor woman it was all about a little "company"! the worst thing was she was more into getting married and having mixed race babies and that made me totally angry because she was one of those idiotic ones who believed that mixed race children was better looking and well i wasn't about to give my DNA to some bloody idiot of a woman! she was so hurt when i told her i don't want any mixed children since i love my people and myself most of all "BLACK WOMEN" she sobbed and sobbed and i really didn't care because i thought she was disrespectful to me so i let her have it! My point is i believe there are some black people who are genuine about having a relationship outside their community but i honestly can't say the same for the non blacks its always a hidden agenda and we all know the trends that you people follow if its not the sugar daddy thing its the need to have an exotic woman(black woman) to raise your status and i think thats devilish but its a shame us black people and so forgiving for most of the wrong reasons... My contention is no amount of multi-cultural relationships will not brake the human understanding barrier its been here from the beginning of time! "One don't have to F@*$ a person of another racial group to bring about basic human understanding" we mingle with people each day and meet different people and talk and interact with people each day of our existence that alone can harness human understanding but i'm afraid man's lust has prevented him from seeing the simple truth... fortunately for me the only being that brings me to my knees are those dark, sweet, intelligent and warm and sexy "BLACK" women none other! joke is when there is none around i get miserable...(laugh)

after reading all the comments,by the way,i am a white man in a relationship with a black lady,i agree with large parts of what blackmanluvchocolat says. some of the comments made in previous posts actually segregate our races more.i have dated white women, black women and a oriental woman too,but i didn't see that as an issue.i genuinley got on with those women and was attracted to them because they were attractive and lovely people ,not because they were black/white or oriental or despite that fact either. all relationships have differences ,whether interracial or not,and we as humans have to stop using race as a crutch to prove points or to disprove those same points.to me my partner isn't white ,black or oriental, she's simply the person i enjoy being with and love to pieces.i'm proud of her and it's because she is who she is...a beautiful, intelligent human being. obviously there are things i don't agree with in the same post, because i don't really see the massive differences between colour and race, and whatever horrific things have happened in our pasts, thats not down to us,we can only hope to change it for the better...love to all!!

This topic is interesting and thats all it is to me, and i find a lot of the comments to be quite baseless at times especially when it comes to black/white "interracial" re relationships... point 1. (Karl Grosvenor)"I love black women. In the past this sort of thing would have been discouraged even frowned upon but it's nice to to know it's tolerated in society now and it's lovely to see there are many other white men in relationships with black women." I find your comments quite strange since what you said was not created by us (black folks) it was your white ancestry that caused it all more so your points mirrors that of many whites and the what i want i must have attitude (nothing against you my man)... we all should objectively examine our views before posting them! "times have not and will not change until the second coming" 2.Yet another strange phenomenon "white men are now seeing the grate values in a black woman" now this is something that has always plagued me, i often wonder why? now i have always find my black women extremely valuable to my very existence as a child and as a man, i saw it and still it in my mother and all the beautiful black in my life and for that i honor them always and any black man who doesn't see their extreme value well something is strangely wrong!!! 3. I had read a thread once by a white guy which said" i (he) don't like white women because they age like bananas" this is a white guy who claims to love black women! ha ha ha some of you are so laughable. Come on my sistas you are way too intelligent to be falling for those sorts of things... No offense to the white women but i am not attracted to any of you though i had dated one girl once and thought what the hell was i doing since we couldn't identify with each other in anyway possible. Now if you are going to be critical about my comments please be objective and totally honest with yourself, ask yourself am i being with a black/white person for the right reasons? Do we identify? does our views differ drastically (i.e.) politics, religion, etc? do i need the aggravation? hopefully one will find the answers.

Hear! Hear! Outpass35. I too have dated outside my race for most of my life. I don't care what others think- all I care about is that my man and me are happy! Interracial Dating is here and it's happening! It should never have to be frowned upon or tolerated but simply ACCEPTED... :o)

Unme it was a reality series on the FX network. The ratings must not have been too good cause they never re-ran it or anything.

I agree with UNME. The more you know about other people and cultures the more you can learn about yourself.

fact is the number of interracial relationships is growing and growing , and there is nothing anybody can do about it and i love that fact , basically we have the freedom that 200 years ago in america was denied to many by law or just common ignorant hate.and a fact is god created us all man and woman god never said he created black man or white man or asian man or latin man , he said he created simply (MAN).

Nice article but I would like to point out there are many cultures shapes size and skin colours of people but there is only one race and that's the Human race. Every other thing is this article I agree with, and think is lovely, I love black women. In the past this sort of thing would have been discouraged even frowned upon but it's nice to to know it's tolerated in society now and it's lovely to see there are many other white men in relationships with black women.
