How would you describe yourself?
I'm a writer and editor in the Mad Men trade but a boulevardier by inclination. I love a good glass of wine and a good meal in good company. I like to be well dressed, in the classic sense, when possible.
I'm one of those San Franciscans of a certain age who passed through the punk era and the new wave 80's barely unscathed, going from "big hair" to "big band" in short order. I love the City and its rich and eccentric history. I don't know everyone in town, but I've met most of them at least once. Go ahead, ask me anything.
I'm active and relatively fit for my age -- hiking, biking, the gym, the water. I enjoy reading magazines and books -- history and biography mostly, though some fiction as well. I like jazz and big band music, classical, some pop and electronic. I am Tory by nature but liberal in practice. (Points for you if you know what I mean.)
I have a B. A. In the Humanities with a minor in Journalism from San Francisco State. I have been a: gardener, bar manager, retail store manager, ranch hand, journalist, Web communications consultant, editor, and a "social media manager" -- whatever that is. Maybe next I'll open a cafe. I'd like to live on a boat.
I consider myself a citizen of the world -- how pretentious is that? -- having lived, gone to school and worked abroad, in England and in Finland, and have traveled extensively in Europe, though I have lived in San Francisco for most of my adult life.
I would like to visit: India, Southeast Asia and South America. These days, though, road trips to out-of-the-way places in the American West and the great deserts -- like Black Rock and the Mojave -- are what I like best. Living in San Francisco, I don't need a car, so I don't own one. When I go on a road trip, I simply rent.
I can teach you to say "hello," "good bye," "excuse me," "drug store" and "ketchup" in Finnish.
I am at turns giddy and sulky, caring and cantankerous, and have a wicked sense of humor.
I don't believe in astrology and have no religion but am open to it in others. Well, technically I guess I'm a Deist.
I am not fond of anything cliche, trite, cutesy or "twee."
I am open-minded (up to a point), and think just about anything is possible within the realm of possibility.
I am looking for
Someone who:
- Can handle a handful
- Is curvaceous but fit
- Will complement (not "compliment") me without being like me
- Is literate if not literary
- Is easy-going and not "high maintenance"
- Has a wicked sense of humor. (As the great society wit, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, once said, "If you haven't got anything good to say, come sit next to me.")
- Is eager to laugh (even at herself) and share experiences
- Prefers quirky, off-the-wall experiences to luxurious ones, and good times to fine jewelry
- Dresses well -- and knows when to wear a dress
- Is hardy(and hearty) yet feminine
- Knows when to slow down, when to talk and when to soak up the silences.
- Knows how to kiss.
Need not apply: Cell phone squawkers; out-of-towners (sorry, but I'm a City boy); pot heads; ersatz yuppie Buddhists; self-help book nuts; flakes.
