Woman Becomes a Hero for Laughing in Racist's Face

It takes one! One person to stand up against injustice. One person to decide not to take things lying down. All it takes is one person who fights for what they believe in. And Saffiyah Khan is one such person.

On the 8th of April, the English Defence League movement was holding a rally in Birmingham, United Kingdom. This is a city known for having a large number of immigrants. The rally was being held because of the Westminster bridge terror attack by Khalid Masood. It was geared towards opposing the spread of Islam.

During the rally, the members of EDL surrounded a Muslim bystander in a headscarf who was walking down the street. Saffiyah Khan intervened. And that is when she came face-to-face with the leader of EDL, Ian Crossland. Crossland was aggressive towards Khan. However, Khan didn’t cave into his intimidation. Instead, she laughed in his face.

There was photographer present to capture this lovely moment. Joe Giddens of Press Association took various photos of Khan standing up for herself. The photos have since been making rounds on social media.

“I ended up going to the EDL demo because there is a history of harassment and assault of Muslims, vulnerable members of the public, and people of colour at the demos and outside of it. I went with the intent of showing support for anyone who was assaulted or harassed by them,” said Khan about the incident.

“I didn’t feel threatened in the slightest way. Though later the 25 individuals who were circling [the woman in the blue headscarf] then came to circle me and the other individuals who had an issue with that situation.”

People on social media have been hailing Khan for her bravery; for standing up to Crossland. One Mike Meade commented: “she is showing more Britishness in that one smile than he’ll ever show in his sad pitiful lifetime.” Desiree Valenzuela on the other hand said: “Crowd of loudmouth punks surround a lone woman…and she laughs in their faces; perfect response.”

Like I said, it takes one!
