Choose sides: Black, White, Asian or Hispanic?

Posted by Leticia, 25 Sep

Just when you thought it was safe to turn on the television again...it looks like reality TV is here to stay. Have you heard about the new season of Survivor? For season #13 of this CBS reality show, the producers have put 20 contestants into four groups. You guessed it...Blacks, Whites, Asians and Hispanics. Will you choose sides? Will this get you to watch? I must admit, I love to see a bad horror movie every once in a while...I'm in.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a big fan of the show Survivor. I'm often trying to escape from my own reality, so submerging myself into a total stranger's reality is not my idea of an entertaining night. However, I must admit that I will be checking out the new season just to see if "my race" is representing me to the fullest and if other races are living up to the stereotypes that we've all come to know and love.

Find your soulmate on InterracialDatingCentral

For example; is the African American Tribe, sleeping late, not doing any work and blaming each for their lack of immunities? Will the Asian Tribe men be resorting to intellect or violence, while their women resort to using sex and seduction to get the upper hand in the competition? How about the Hispanic Tribe? Did they sneak a few extra family members over to the island thinking no one would notice? Are they trading manual labor for extra food? And let us not forget the White Tribe. Well, we all know that they really won't have to do much to win because they are the superior race. And since they are also compassionate, they will allow the Hispanics to work for them, the Asian women to take care of them and the Blacks...well, they'll give them something to complain about.

All joking aside, I really do have mixed feelings about this racial ploy to increase ratings. I'm glad to see that more races are being given the opportunity to appear on television. It will be interesting to see how the five people within the same race are different from one another. More importantly, it will be great for the country to see how other races differ from their stereotypes and have more similar traits than they realize.

What bothers me is the fact that as a nation, we continue to show our insanity, by continuing to do the same thing (put one race against the other), and expect something different to happen. Or maybe we don't. Maybe the powers that be have got this whole thing figured out. If we continue to fight and not trust each other, we'll stay apart and argue over the little things like, "Who's getting all the minimum wage jobs or the high interest loans", instead of coming together and forcing our leaders to do the best for all people, not just the ones with the biggest bankroll.

Putting all my conspiracy theories aside, I do understand that this is just one television show. I also realize that it's for entertainment purposes only. However, not everyone with a television has my sense and sensibility.

Who knows, maybe the show will surprise us all and really focus on how we are all a part of the human race, all God's children. Perhaps it'll embrace our cultural diversity while highlighting our individual similarities...what am I thinking we're talking about TV. Besides, where does it end? Next season do we have the Lawyer Tribe, Doctor Tribe, Pimp Tribe and the Prostitute Tribe? Or do we have the Transgender vs. the homophobe and the Christians vs. the Atheist?

This is Leticia...representing all races!

Dont shows like Friends and Sex and the City already tell us that there is racial segregation. We don't often see other races in these prime time programmes.

It was a really stupid idea, but it got them what they wanted - lots of attention and probably some ratings.

All reality shows are garbage! It's all meant to distract you from what's really going on. War, laws being inacted that will restrict your freedoms, rising cost of living & stagnant earning increase.

I used to watch "survivor" how ever i have lost interest. This is sooo sad of the producers, that they needed to do that for ratings, i just hope people realize that its a show and realise its a show and how ignorant people are just to make a dollar. Im so disappointed in CBS. NO matter what they state were are all 100% equal.

All we need is to light a spark (or should I say a bad fire) to destroy what we have tried to educate people about for a long time, stereotypes, black vs white, gangs vs the law. It takes an eternity to get people to change their beliefs and gain understanding of the richness of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds, and that human beings are just that, human beings, regardless of the color of their skin, but it can take minutes to trash anything we have gained in the process by promoting entertainment like this. All for the mighty dollar$ It doesn't make sense, hasn't anyone been listening?

On a second note, the whole thing is made worse by the media. Suppose, say media gives such a project a black out. No one shall know it exists.

yes it is sad!!! but the only thing we can do is shake our head and talk about putting someone's balls in their milk or something....or send them a letter (which i'm sure half of america has already done so) saying ''dont keep repeating dumb s**t over and over...that's the definition of ignorant'' and the idea of splitting races to get tv ratings is just that....ignorant.

@ Bradlee...you can't call people idiots just because they choose to watch a tv show. That's like me calling you an idiot because you choose to post a comment in a multi-cultural e-zine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be free to share it, however express your discontent and non-appreciation with CBS. Better yet, judge the contestants if you like for agreeing to participate in a segregated cast for as long as they did. I for one, enjoy watching the dynamics between "people", on and off camera. I'm educated enough to know that reality tv is not reality at all, but I still enjoy it, just like others enjoy B-movies. Now that the cast has been de-segregated, none of the dynamics have changed, at all. It all boiled back down to basic human nature. My point is, tv is tv. If you don't like it you don't have to watch and support it. If it really pisses you off, then do something about it. Write your congressman, boycott CBS. Return your plasma to Best Buy and get a refund, whatever you feel like you need to do. Don't however, call people idiots for doing what they choose to do in their own free time.
