Is "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" teaching us something about interracial dating?

So Khloé slit from her husband Lamar Odom. And the paparazzi have been on their case. On the other hand; Kim found love and tied the knot with Kanye West… and the couple is happy with their baby North.

Much as this happened way back, while they were attending some opera ball in Vienna, some guy in blackface walks up to Kim saying: "It's me, Kanye!" As if that wasn’t enough, back at the hotel, Kim experiences prejudice again: a woman screams at Kim and the daughter North: "She's with a black guy, and that baby is black."

Kim writes a blog post after her incidents reflecting her experience. And guess what? Her thoughts reveal how being married interracially and being a mother to an interracial child have changes her… she writes about her views on racial discrimination as how sees it now:

“To be honest, before I had North, I never really gave racism or discrimination a lot of thought. It is obviously a topic that Kanye is passionate about, but I guess it was easier for me to believe that it was someone else's battle. But recently, I've read and personally experienced some incidents that have sickened me and made me take notice. I realize that racism and discrimination are still alive, and just as hateful and deadly as they ever have been.”

Is she the first person to have experienced firsthand racism? Definitely not. The only difference between her and the rest of us is that being in the public eye, the challenges mixed families face are exposed to the rest of us. And Kim, Kanye and their mixed race daughter, North, could be the perfect prominent example. And Kim is trying to normalize her mixed marriage and family by posting pictures of her family in the limelight for all to see; for the rest of us in mixed families to relate to… And some of these images garnered the most likes on Instagram; record broken!

One thing for sure; maybe most of us have never experienced such kind of prejudice firsthand; but Kim’s incidence has given us a window into it. That small glimpse of racial prejudice and ignorance at their family shows the hard truth interracial families have to grapple with.
