Is gay marriage and interracial marriage similar?

In 1960’s, it was illegal to marry interracially. Now we have Proposition 8, a state measure on the ballot this election, which intends to prohibit gay marriages. The laws against interracial marriage were unconstitutional and those against Proposition 8 will say it is unconstitutional to put homosexuals in the same position.

Is the gay marriage fight analogous to the fight against interracial marriage? Is it OK to compare gay marriage to interracial marriage? How can Americans balance moral issues and people's rights on this issue?

To say that there is a similarity between gay marriage and interracial marraige is a swinging insult at people who want to be in an interracial relationship. IR relationships are not immoral. Now I am not trying to preach or condemn homosexuals. I am like to each his/her own. I believe that everyone has a right to live the way they choose as long as it doesn't physically harm anyone else. The issues are seperate.

If you think gay marriage is the same as any kind of heterosexual marriage, you are probably not doing it right. LOL

i think they are the same. As a young straight black teenager who dates interracially i know some things can't be compared like slavery and what not, but let's not forget god is a mythical creature that no one can prove exists. The bible is nothing but a book that was written and rewritten and rewritten again throughout history and blacks were considered property, worthless, and not human, not to long ago. children are supposed to be killed if they cuss or disrespect their parents. Imagine what life would be like if the bible was followed diligently. If you follow the bible for one thing, follow it for everything, don't just pick through things you don't like. If you want acceptance you must first give. We are all human and all we're teaching is hate and intolerence to the generations after us. How would you like your child growing up in a world like that. Change starts with us, love is love. You fall in love with a smile, eyes, hope, a heart, soul and personality, not gender and besides all they want is to be treated equally like we african americans did at one point and we still do. This is a racist country and a few months ago i was ashamed to be an american for what this country was supposed to stand for freedom or 'the land of the free' so much for that thought, maybe we should change the slogan so we won't mislead others. I used to be a christian but could not and can not convert to the christian beliefs. I am spiritual and have moral and beliefs. I hope to one day have and raise openminded children

the question can really only be answered by a person first defining marriage and what they believe the institution of marriage is based on. Answering that question first fills out the blanks for a lot of resulting/related issues. from that aspect, i can see how proponents of gay marriage would view their "struggle" as similiar or analogous to the civil rights "struggle" or the fight for interracial marriage in particular. having said that, i personally don't agree with the analogy. mostly because i don't think homosexuality is proper. i believe marriage is between a man and a woman, and therefore, i believe to promote anything otherwise is wrong. to sum up, comparing the fight to make something "wrong" legal shouldn't be compared to the fight of making something "not wrong" legal. to do so would be irrational. for the last question, i go back to what i said at first. first one must define morals and what they base them on. i personally don't think america can balance moral issues vs people's rights. a person's morals, IMO, should dictate what he or she believes basic human rights are. anything less is spineless, gutless, weak, or however else you may put it. so as a country, if we can't agree whether something is right or wrong, we can't legislate whether its legal or illegal. to the christians, remember in the end, we are tasked to love ALL mankind, no matter what they believe. God bless...

One can also ask: "What is worse;racism or homophobia?" In my opinion, both. If you are against racism and homophobic, then you sound hypocritical.

the one thing no one realizes about the Bible, is that it can be used on either side of any argument. the Bible should be a guide to your own personal living...not as tool in an argument, because it can be used on any defense. its been used to justify evils, discrimination, hatred...anything and everything. i think people should use the Bible for what its for. a guide for your own personal life and relationship with God. rather than everyone and anyone on either side, using it to justify all sorts of things. because like i said...the Bible can be twisted to serve anyone's argument in the end.

id say they are comparable. the gay experience isnt the same as the black experience. people have tried to compare gay movement to civil rights movement and slavery. i disagree there. but the idea of interracial marriage and gay marriage are similar. they are parallel. 40 years ago...if you loved someone out of your race...you couldnt marry back then. and if you decided to pursue the relationship, you had to pray to God no one found out and killed you or arrested you for it. People back then, managed to use the Bible to justify anti-miscegenation laws. people used the Bible to justify slavery. remember, once upon a time blacks were just property and not human. I personally dont believe in gay marriages, but i think its wrong to deny someone their happiness. why would anyone choose to be gay anyways? gay marriage being illegal, hasnt stopped all the relationships you see. all it would do is give them a document that would afford them the same equal rights as other couples, in case something happened to their loved one. its amazing....some people sit on their high horse saying something is wrong, when not too long ago, their own existence was considered wrong (and by some peoples view, is still considered wrong). im not saying black and gay are comparable...but the idea of prohibiting people from being happy with their loved one, is comparable. no matter what each of our personal religious beliefs are...what right do we have to impose our own personal opinions and beliefs on others? especially when we dont want the same done to us? are people that scared of tolerance? there is a reason, religion should be a personal thing and not a government thing, and thats because in this country there are different religions...and as much as you are for imposing your beliefs on others...the wheel could always turn away from your favor and work against YOU later on.

Funny how everyone on this board protests narrow-mindedness but as soon as gayness comes up it's all righteous condemnation. Everyone assumes they have the right answer, based on what? The Bible? The Bible also advocates certain diets, clothing, and plucking out your own offending eye. Had any water from wine lately? Maybe your disgust at gay relationships is very similar to that experienced by those against interracial relationships. But you think others are "narrow minded." Ah well.

Guys there is a great LGBT civil rights organization called the Empowering Spirits Foundation. They are very creative in how they approach this hot topic issue, in that they engage in service oriented activities in communities typically opposed to equal rights to foster thought and change for LGBT equality. A friend of mine told me about it and I thought it was a great, positive approach to the issue. We had so much fun at the last event and it was great to give back to the community. Plus it was great to converse with others on the other side of the table in a way that wasn't confrontational. Anyway, this can be such a heated issue and I thought this was a unique approach.

There's a simple answer to this question, which has been clearly provided by nature. Being one cannot reproduce in a gay relationship/marriage and one can reproduce in an interracial relationship/marriage then they are not the same. Putting that aside, I don't have a problem with interracial relationships or marriage; to each his own. But I do have a problem with the fact that when whites produce offspring with non-whites, the dominant characteristics of the offspring are NEVER white. Forget about the offspring resembling anyone on the white side. On top of that, the offspring will always identify himself/herself with the non-white element. There are countless examples and we can start with President Obama. So my problem is not with the marriage or relationship, but with the fact that I feel my people are being exterminated by interracial breeding, abortions and low birth rates. Eric

Well I am against it and this is like comparing apples to oranges. Like mentioned by some already marriage is in the constitution and not anything about races getting together. So are we changing the constitution now? However, its also a matter of evolution and our country has evolved and it has become more common to see interracial couples. So who knows what point we may evolve to in the future.

According to the Bible marriage is a union between man and woman regardless of their skin color.Gay marriage I think is disgusting in the eyes of God and I believe it is a sin but who are we to judge. We all will be judged in the end after all. Lets leave some of these issues to God to take care of while we enjoy our interracial relationships.

    The gay and lesbians is not acceptable with God ,that is why he destroyed the city of Sodom, there have never been two men that could give birth to a child ,nor has there ever been two women that have gave birth to a child , God made it clear that he intended for a man and a woman to produce a child from the begining,{ Genesis.19; 1-38 }

I agree on one of the statement {Pepsi5451} made in her comment. race is totallydiffeent than ones sexual preference. I just want to point out that the Bible says in Genesis.19; 1-38 plainly explain that God destroyed the city Sodom because if sin, of the same sex,men with men,the angels that came to destroy the city gave Lot and his family a chance to get out of the city, before they destroyed it and told them not to look back but Lot wife disobeyed and turn and look back and she turned to a pillow of salt.lost her life. right there.if any one is interested ,just get a study reference Bible ,english transulated ,it might break it down and make it a little more understandable.

I think that gay marriages are immoral and should not be allowed. People are determined what the color of their skins are, but, over the years and based of what I have witnessed, I have concluded that the homosexual lifestyle is a choice and it is not genetically based.I see "gay women" sleep with straight men. Why? I seen " gay women" all of sudden go completely straight. Take Anne Heche as an example.

There is no real basis for comparison here. Yes they were both outlawed at one time or another but no they are not the same. Should they be allowed to be together, its a free country, why not? Biases and prejuidices have cause so much harm that continue today to bleed into all our lives. Whatever happened to live and let live?

I personally think there is a big difference between marrying someone that happens to be a different color than you and marrying someone that shares your sex. I CAN completely see why many would compare the two because, sadly, many of the same people who are rabidly against race mixing are also against same sex marriage. I would never presume to judge someone for their racial or sexual preference but I don't think interracial relationships and same sex relationships are comparable. Come to think of it there are plenty of gays/lesbians out there that wouldn't date outside their race and would probably be just as offended at the comparison as some here.

just want to put my 2 cents in. smile. a holy roller as one member put it on here, is just a labe they want to give what they call christian. but a born again save bible believer not only talk it but also apply the word to theire life, and according to the bible no one is born a homosexual or lesbian but they aquires those spirit after they are born. and once any one yeild to any one of those spirits the spirit goes on the inside of them their bodies, and the more you yeild to that spirit the stronger the spirit get control of any one yeilding to it.and after doing this often enough then the spirit take control of you. with a self rightouse spirit it make u think you know everything and no one can tell you nothing, you think u are always right.once that spirit takes control. just read Roman; 1;chapter.

Of course any comparison along those lines is absurd and insulting. It is natural for men and women to be attracted to one another, and being attracted to a person of a different race is just as natural as being attracted to a person with a different hair color or eye color. Now, based on the research I have studied no genetic basis for homosexuality has ever been confirmed, which means that people are not born gay. People become gay because of certain life experiences, usually something bad that happens to them as a child which leads to those tendencies later on. Homosexuality is a mental illness, just like pederasty and bestiality. And it would be more apt to compare it with those issues. The reason they try comparing it to race is because they wish to construe it as a civil rights issue, and the reason they wish to do that is because they are looking to the government to justify their behavior and provide them with a sense of legitimacy. The fact of the matter is though, that governments do not determine right and wrong, and if they ever succeed then the government will be used to trample on the civil rights of those who disagree with their position.

It's clear that interracial marriage is not equivalent to gay marriage since race is very clearly inherited. However, there is a parallel between the two as far as the fact that opposition is based purely on HATRED and INTOLERANCE. Homosexuality may not be inherited, and I don't know if people are born with it. One thing I'm sure of is that homosexuality can't be a choice unless you're bisexual. Same goes for heterosexuality. Gay people should be allowed to marry simply because they are adults and no one should be able to deny an able-bodies adult their happiness. A divorced friend of mine summed it up perfectly. "I don't see why gay people shouldn't be allowed to share in the misery of marriage just like the rest of us." LOL!

Before I answer the question, I have to get this off of my chest. I am SO SICK AND TIRED of people calling Christians "Holy Rollers." I don't know of any formal religion that accepts homosexuality. In "third world" countries, homosexual men are stoned to death and many of these people are not Christians. If a person is a Christian and uses their Christian moral beliefs (moral code by which much of the Constitution of the United States was formed) to justify their beliefs, then why would you call them names and try to discredit their beliefs because they are Christians? THAT IS WHAT IS PATHETIC! Now, to answer the question..... 1) NO THEY ARE NOT THE SAME! I had a gay male (and I do have gay friends) who tried to compare the struggle of gays with the Civil Rights Movement. The day that all blacks can pretend they are white (and get away with it), then it will be the same. 2) For those of you who are quoting scripture, there are New Testament texts that speak out against homosexuality. But it also speaks out against other things, so if you are not homosexual but are committing violating scripture with other 'social ills', then you are going to burn as well....according to scripture. Read Romans 1. If you don't have a Bible, go to Biblegateway.com. 3) All homosexuals aren't born homosexuals. I know this for a fact!! Of the gay men that I know very intimately (not sexually), there are quite a few that were molested by men when they were very young, under the age of 10. This act of molestation shaped their sexual perception, leaving them to think they were gay because "why else would a man do that to them if they weren't?" Of all of the men that I know were molested by a man when they were young, one is heterosexual. Also, there are DL men who were inmates and were gang raped (which altered their sense of sexuality) or were influenced by the behavior of sexual deviants around them and used other men, who allowed it and wanted it, as a sexual outlet. Once they leave the joint, they have been fully indoctrinated with the homosexual behavior and begins exercising it outside of the prison walls, usually without the females they date or marry knowing. I also know of women who "became" lesbians because they were tired of being treated poorly by men and figured they would find the affections of a woman, the exact opposite of a man. If they are completely turned out, they usually return to a man when they find one that treats them decently. I also know that lesbians tried to "turn me" for four years while I was in college. I also know of people (men and women) who were also targeted for "turning" who gave in. Many of the women are now married with children. The men are still gay. With all that said, I WISH the conversation would cease comparing The Gay Rights with the Civil Rights Movement. It's been going on since the 80s and quite frankly, it's old, tired and there is no comparison!!

Well, I can agree with a lot of people here in this particular topic. I do feel people can be born with a chemical imbalance that may have an affect on gender mentally. In that case wouldn't that be considered a mental defect? Therefore if one is physically a man/woman but only finds themselves attracted to same sex...should he/she not seek HELP? Just a question. Interracial and Gay are VERY OPPOSITE and cannot be compared. Marriage is not something to be made a joke out of by allowing gay marriage. That opens another can of worms...so I will leave it at that.

Of course its not the same BUT... it disgusts me to see the hate and intolerance towards gay couples when in essence this is what we are struggling with in interracial couples too...!! How can you NOT accept others for what they choose when you want to be accepted for what you choose? Couldn't we just all be a little more tolerant and accepting towards each others decisions whether it's gay, interracial or whatnot? As long as the love in any relationship is genuine, isn't that all that REALLY matters?

They are already protected under the laws of this country. They can jump in and out of the closet at will and not readily prosecuted and harassed by racist like black people.

GAY AND INTERRACIAL NO COMPARISON! No matter what race you are if you are a heterosexual couple that means one man and one woman... NOT two men or two women. What ever people choose I think that is their choice but I don't agree with gays adopting. The child lives a lie his or her whole life. No child would want to admit that they had two moms or two dads when asked to draw the family picture in school. And that is just the tip of the iceberg!

I'm procrastinating. So I'll toss my two cents in here. NATURE/NURTURE I don't believe people are born gay. And I don't believe that homosexuality is a choice. UNNATURAL? As far as being unnatural, homosexuality and/or homosexual acts do occur in the animal kingdom. Not that the animal kingdom should set our standards. I'm just saying. If you're talking male homosexuality, maybe it's the anal sex thing that puts you off. I can see that. Although that seems to be a growing, um, option among heterosexual couples. I don't have any proof of that. Just read it in a few places. Anecdotal. IN THE BIBLE I'm not trying to justify or change anybody's mind, but I'd like to point out that it's disingenuous to selectively quote the Bible. It does say in Leviticus that homosexuality is an abomination and "put to death". But wait. There's more. Bad-ass Kids "For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him." (Leviticus 20:9) Sex During Aunt Flo's Visit "If a man lies with a woman during her sickness and uncovers her nakedness, he has discovered her flow, and she has uncovered the flow of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from her people." (Leviticus 20:18) Other Abominations "But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you." (Leviticus 11:10) "They (shellfish) shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, but you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination." (Leviticus 11:11) "Whatever in the water does not have fins or scales; that shall be an abomination to you." (Leviticus 11:12) Just trying to keep things in perspective. WHAT WAS THE QUESTION AGAIN? Oh. Gay marriage and interracial marriage. Gay marriage definitely evokes the same fear and indignation as interracial marriage used to. (Wow. There used to be a law in VA that said that interracial children were "illegitimate and without the protections and privileges accorded to the children of lawfully wedded parents". That's harsh.) Not the same but there are some analogies. "Black and white people inter-marrying?! Unholy union! Next thing you know you'll have men marrying men. Where does it end?"

There is no way in this world or any other any way to viably compare and contrast the issue of interracial marriage or relationships to that of homosexual ones. 'Race' scientifically amounts to little more than larger amounts of pigmentation in the skin that, coupled with genetic tendencies for facial structure and other cosmetic or minor differences is the primary difference in 'race' as far as I am concerned. I absolutely do NOT believe that 'beauty is only skin deep' it has NOTHING at all to do with skin, beauty is beauty! 'White' or 'Black' people or anyone with any pigmentation level can reproduce with anyone else of any other pigmentation level just go ask Tiger Woods! Actually the biggest difference between 'races' in this country involves subcultures more than anything. The gay subculture is different as well. While I do not approve of gay relations it is not my place to approve or disapprove. Ask a gay man to have a baby with another gay man or a gay woman with another gay woman without any outside interference and THEN maybe you could compare interracial relationships and gay relationships. I find it rather insulting myself that any of my past 'interracial' relationships could be used as a basis of comparison to gay marriage.

I totally agree with ebonyq when she says that its pretty insulting to compare interracial relationships to gay/homosexual relationships. It is totally incomparable. As far as marriage goes, yes, I believe that it is supposed to be man for woman visa versa. I think gay marriage makes a joke of what marriage is supposed to be. Like for example the freak show of the woman who got a sex change but kept her sex organs and got pregnant? I've never had a child but that really offended me as well. Motherhood is something that is supposed to be special and that trans gendered woman, looking every bit like a man, with a child in her womb...its like seriously. Make up your mind. You cant have it both. It actually disgusted me. Before you know it people will be pushing to legalize incestial marriages...or an animal... Just as the question above asks.

It is amazing that so few people can rise up and make so much noise with the sole purpose of distorting the laws of nature. God is not a God of confusion. If He desired to have man & man or woman & woman lie together, He would have made us all that way. He gave us freedom of choice but also the Bible to guide our decisions. Equating homosexuality to a relationship between persons of different race is insulting to me. There is no comparison. Gay adults can do what they want but they have no right to attack the institution of marriage.

I am baffeled......race is totally different than ones sexual preference.....apples and oranges. There are other injustices that you can compare to gay marraige....please stop comparing black to gays and white women (minorities). A person is born black, white, etc....even though, I don't claim to know if gays were born that way or not, they do have a choice as there are people who repress their gay tendencies, which again, I can't argue if right or wrong, but no one has he option of being born a certain race. Stop with the stupidness......Some doctors think being gay has to do with mental illness, or is immoral, etc.....what an insult that blacks are being compared in his way.....there is nothing wrong about our chromozones....dna....etc.

I doubt the above question is asking if being gay is the same as being black. It is merely compairing the fact that both groups are/were being treated in a way that is not only immoral but unconstitutional. The real issue isn't if you beleive in gay marriage. The constitution says it's legal so therefore it should be. Also, for all of the people on here riding their religious high horse in our separation of church and state: isn't god the only one that can judge? Vote No on prop 8. It's not right for calfornia.

It amazes me that this has taken on life as a valid topic. There is NO comparison. We're talking apples and oranges to the max here. Whoever first decided to play the "race card" in this instance was, in my view, grasping for leverage, and something else to use for validation. It insults the intelligence.

As I am bi-"paratrexual" [TG "admirer"...;)] therefore GLBTQ-(very)friendly, I favor "gay" marriage. There really only is marriage. But I'm polyamorous as well (yes I think polygamy is sexy as hell!)

i agree that they should base it on race, but damn are you stupid if you think people that are gay chose to be gay, give me a frigging break. Ignorant people some of you are, who the hell are you to tell people what they should do with their lives. Homosexual people were born that way, they didnt choose to be gay. Quit pushing the bible and god into everything, i am not religious and i do not follow a book that was written by a MAN not a supernatural being.

I totally disagree with the two above statements!! I am a heterosexual man who only like women. To me color means nothing. Now for the people on here who are holy rollers quoting scripturs in actually quite offensive and I cansider to be small minded as well as iggnorent!!!!!!!!! I am a Jew which has nada to do with this subject. I find it totally idiotic when I read people become gay. NO they were born homsexual and are still the chldren of GOD. Hense thay are who they are and to each there own. I dont like homosexuality, but it has been around since the dawn of the human era. Before the bible was even thought of. Now thats a fact not written in a book written by man. And as the man above me wrote. Quote " Love is love" "plain and simple"

i agree with Carece. it isnt the same at all ! a woman and man are designed by God to be pardners. "it is detestable for a man to lie with another man as he would lie with a woman. and they must be put to death; their blood will be on their own hands." leviticus 20:13. humans are all made in his likeness. and our beauty isnt in our skin color, its in our hearts and souls. if 2 can communicate well and have that " die for you love" 1st john 3:16. who are we to separate what God has joined? wether it be across racial barriers or not,,? Love is LOVE. plain and simple...

Interracial marriage is NOTHING like Gay marriage! GOD designed marriage as 1 man for 1 woman. He NEVER said we weren't suppose to marry across racial lines RACIST IGNORANT people did that. But, GOD CLEARLY forbids same sex relationships. When we start shanging GODS structure/laws then we are heading into dangerous territory! I applaud those who find love in other races, but not same sex. Gays need to STOP comparing their situtations to being BLACK too! You chose to be gay. We DO NOT CHOOSE our race it is given by GOD!
