Interracial marriage slacking?

Posted by James, 01 Jun 10

Between the years 1990 and 2000 there was a 65% increase in interracial marriage. Going by figures from the latest census, the number has increased by 20% since the year 2000. There still is a rise in interracial marriage but the percentage reflects a drop-off in the increase.

This is according to a recent article by Associated Press reporter Hope Yen.

Demographers attribute this to the steady flow of immigration of Hispanics and Asians which has provided these groups of minorities with partners who are ethnically and culturally similar hence making it less likely for them to intermarry due to cultural and language differences between them and whites.

What are you looking for?

Professor of sociology and public policy at Cornell University, Daniel Lichter said, "With a white backlash toward immigrant groups, some immigrants are more likely to turn inward to each other for support." For instance, the probability of an Asian immigrant marrying a U.S. born Asian has increased 3 times for men and 5 times for women.

Contrary to the above, the likelihood of blacks marrying whites has multiplies 3 times compared to the year 1980. This has been attributed to higher educational achievements and rising black middle class that has brought about an increase in interaction with other races, among other things.

Much as these are figures from the Census, Yen’s article seems to imply that interracial marriage is marriage between people of other races and whites. It’s all about other races marrying white people. Aren’t other interracial combos ‘interracial’?

She also starts her article with the question "Melting pot or racial divide?" Does this mean interracial marriage is the ultimate measure of a healthy racial climate? I don’t agree there. I know quite a number of racists who are in interracial relationships. I don’t think being married to a person from another race magically wishes racism away. I don’t think same-race marriages symbolize racial division either.

Besides marriage, we meet people…we correlate… we fall in love in the process. You can’t choose who you fall in love with. All that matters is that the two of you find common ground you can build a lasting relationship on – interracial or otherwise.

We love citing these trends in a bid to try and explain stuff. The fact that figures show interracial marriages aren’t increasing at the rate at which they were before shouldn’t be any cause for alarm. We shouldn’t try to explain why or try to make sense of it. How about we focus on the fact that there is an increase – 8% of the marriages in the U.S. are interracial, which is up from 7% in the year 2000; PERIOD!

I think dating and marriage among races is becoming more common as we get exposed to more cultures in this world through ease of travel and the internet. Nothing wrong with going outside of your race especially if you are looking for something special as far as personality and you haven't found it in your race. That's why have dated mostly Asians because I am fascinated with the different Asian cultures and have incorporated some of it into my own. I even bow all the time, even to non-Asians which non-Asian find weird but it is now part of my culture because it is a way to show respect especially to people you aren't familiar enough to shake hands. Bowing shows respect with no contact and is a good way to say thank you to people when you are out that are serving you especially at restaurants of any kind where they take away things or refill drinks often. I get tired of saying thank you and it is easier to bow when they fill up my ice tea for the fifth time.;-) The Koreans even have a word for it called "Insa."

For me, I think it is more like the human race. Inter-racial is kind of sketchy and I would prefer cross cultural or inter-ethnic marriage.

I like what Rick Hayes had to say but I'm a Multi-Mixed individual African American, White & Blk. Foot Indian but I like dating White(Irish, Italian just to name a few)Spanish/Hispanic so far. But I must say as you get older its basically what your interest in life that pulls your commenality together. Also how a man treats a woman in public and behind closed doors is so crucial to a relationship along with great communication don't go to be being mad at each other. Its easier to love a person rather than to hate them till the grave.

Good morning Ms.Godiva. (hugs) I love this..... Godiva: "I have no interest in learning how to play golf so it would not benefit me to subscribe to Golf Digest." Petite: You summed it up quite well. I don't need to add anything else to that right there! *smile*. Yes, you are absolutely right...the intentions count. I'm at last grateful though that there is another topic of interest that I hope gets the long overdue attention it deserves. You go girl! So you baked too? Goodness, I'm thinking to myself ("self"), what are you going to do when July comes? Then of course, as it came as no surprise to me, that I will do what I always do in the dead of summer. Stay away from windows during lightning storms, stay indoors anywhere where there is air-conditioning. Teeheee. There's no pleasing me when it comes to weather. I don't like extreme temps. Too cold that ain't good, too hot, ummm, no. Spring...Y E S!!!! Peace sis...

@Ms.Petite, It's not only hot in the big apple, girl I was roasting earlier in the day. It stormed and rain for a few and now it's even more humid, which means "hair stays in a ponytail, with no bangs"!!! I can't COMPLETELY understand why in the past for the most part, that this site seemed so focus on black and white, however I will say this, "control the words, control the dialogue". On the other hand, this site is just like anything else in life, what and who we are is exactly what we bring to the table, and this might explain some views on what interracial means, and for some it seems only to be a black and white thing! Maybe some of us did not comprehend the message that James was intending for this blog(2007), which was simple, and I think he said, "we want to help EVERYONE, not familiar with dating people of different cultures and color to understand what interracial dating is". He never said just black and white!! Also it seems to me if you have no interest in dating interracialy, it wouldn't make much sense for a such person to be here, unless of course, you have a less than noble motive for being here, could that be?? Is that too logical?? I have no interest in learning how to play golf so it would not benefit me to subscribe to Golf Digest. I have a few friends who love Japanese Cuisine. We go from state to state trying different Japanese Restaurants. We trade off to be fair, sometimes it's Italian, Greek, and so on. There is one in our group who doesn't care for Japanese at all, but don't you know she will come everytime, knowing that she pretty much hates Japanese, and she will complain, and whine the whole time!! So again if something is not for you, hold no interest to a person whatsoever, then why would you INTENTONALLY be in the midst??? Oh, well!! @Bama, I do hope your sister feels better soon! Pnuemonia is no joke! love godiva

@Godiva I agree Ms. Godiva. It's sort of like a disservice to the other ethnic groups here. Quite frankly I'd love to see more about Latino/Hispanic inter-racial dating. I'm glad I'm not alone, then. Many of these threads are just so "the same" and we could do with a little change of pace around here. Hopefully the OP will recognize this and keep this blog site (or forum discussion threads) wide open! But anywho.....whatcha know good? Stole that from Friendly. (((hugs)))

@Ms.Petite, Hey there!! Just know that you are NOT in the minority here. There have been a few that has passed through here that share the same sentiment in regards to this post, including myself. This is the one post from James (that I can recall), that is not geared to Black and White relationships. By the way James, thanks for gearing the conversation in a much broader view, and outside of the Black and White perimeter!!!! Long overdue!!!!! love godiva

Ms.Jenna: For the life of me, I can not understand why everything is seen in "Black and White?" LOL. As if to say other ethnicities here are, well....not really here. Many are incredulous that I have my own preference. From this I get the feeling of "how dare you?" Teehee. It's hard for me to explain, I've tried but some don't get it! This all could be because I am in the minority here? Don't know. Don't care. Notwithstanding, the fact that it should not matter to them at all. Why should they give a fly'n hoot? I stopped replying and began deleting. LOL. Peace
