What's new at the gym?
This is for all my folks out there that recently realized that the year is almost over and they've been paying for a membership at the local health club. However, the closes they've come to going in, is the time they went to Smoothie King next door. Here are a few last minutes tips and ideas on how to get in shape before the end of the year and before it's time to make a New Year's resolution.
I can't begin to count the number of times that I've looked at the treadmill at the foot of my bed and thought, "today is the day". Yep, today I will take off the clothes that have been hanging on it, remove the towel that I put up there to dry, find the cord and plug it into the wall, step on it push start and begin to walk. Even better than that one, there was the time that my honey got a family membership to the YMCA and we actually went two three times a week...until we took a weeks vacation and forgot to go back, until he changed jobs and we no longer had a free membership.

Not that money was the issue, because truth be told, we live in a complex that has two swimming pools & hot tubs, six tennis courts, a yoga & Pilates room with free classes twice a week and did I mention the 24-hour fitness center?
Yet, with all this at my disposal it wasn't enough to break my old habits. It took me reading the paper and taking a chance. It's called a boot camp. It's really so much more. I found it advertised in the local paper and there was an introductory class being offered, so I went. The thing that appealed to me most was the variety.
We meet three times a week Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6am. There is also an evening class available, but I am definitely a morning person. The very first day of class, I was ready for anything, everything, except kickboxing and that's what we did. After the hour was over I couldn't believe how much energy I had and how much fun it was. The next class we did zomba the next circuit training. What in the world, after a few classes I was already imaging teaching a class. I still couldn't get both feet off the ground or do more than ten push-ups...but I could see so far beyond my current situation.
Another benefit to doing a boot camp style workout versus a personal trainer is the group. There is less pressure to perform, less cost cause you're splitting it up with a group and there is more people to help support your efforts and keep you motivated. My class has a buddy system set up. We email each other once a week and if someone misses a class, we follow up with emails or calls to make sure everything is okay.
It's only been two months and I already feel the difference. We had the holiday off and I got on my treadmill. After that I walked down to the fitness center and laughed all the way through my workout. Isn't it funny how we search and search for the right "whatever", only to find that it's been with us the whole time?! And just like finding that love of your life, when you are ready...you will find them!
