'Game of Thrones' Lacks Diversity, Says David Oyelowo

Posted by James, 17 Oct

British actor David Oyelowo recently criticized the HBO's popular TV series, 'Game of Thrones' for its lack of diversity in main characters. The leading roles seem to have been given to white actors and actresses.

According to Oyelowo, there is "no excuse" for this lack of diversity and feels actors of color deserve leading roles in this fantasy series. He also added that since 'Game of Thrones' features people of color in smaller roles, then there should be room for bigger roles.

In an interview with RadioTimes.com Oyelowo added: "Even if for whatever reason, it’s a world in which people of color in those stories are subservient, or they are more in a helper role, that doesn’t mean they can’t have prominent storylines. All you have to do is shift the focus to focus on those characters."

People of color continue being marginalized in Hollywood. And much as there are colored actors on the show all it shows is how much inequality there is because most of them are given background roles. Oyelowo feels "...it’s a conscious decision to put them on the margins, as opposed to put them front and centre."

Question is: How do we expect the Oscar nominations and awards to be racially inclusive if there will be no people of color to be nominated for these roles in the first place? As Oyelowo puts it, there is no excuse. And at this rate, #OscarsSoWhite will never be a thing of the past. What do you think?

Nathalie Emmanuel role has grow, I think she is gorgeous. That being said, since the story lines are based on English history with a dash of the super natural, dragons and ice zombies, Racial diversity didn't exist in England 1500 years ago. Most major Dothraki characters are minorities. I don't see anyone making a big deal about the lack of white people in anything Tyler Perry makes.

If Hollyweird gave me roles to other Black actors/actresses, besides only Samuel L. Jackson, there would not be a need for Tyler Perry movies to show the talents of black men and women.

I think it is an amalgamation of different periods. As they're going beyond the books now, who knows we might get more races within the show. Hopefully the rather lovely Indira Varma gets more screen time in the next series

Stu, there are Black people in The Game of Thrones... perhaps you have not seen all of the episodes. However, if you are speaking of Asians, Hawiians, Aborigines, Hispanics, Native Americans, Arabs, and minorities of that sort, you are correct. But you know what? I really get tired of the whining about all of this... The show is great and there is a semi diversity of characters. If you look at it logically, in the North, you would not see Black people but as I said, you don't see other minorities either and they are not complaining.

It would be nice to see some nude non-white people.

Let's keep in mind, Game of Thrones takes place in the Middle Ages. Last time I checked, there were no black people in Europe at that time. Let us not forget that Peter Dinklage, a midget actor, has had a significant role on that show. No small person actor has ever received the type of role Peter has had. And most of the women on Games of Thrones are pretty powerful, so there is diversity in the show.

Sure there were but they did not hold positions of prominence. They weren't Kings or Dukes or Knights.

You know what,Nollywood needs more white people in their movies too. Stop moaning actors, the best person should get the role. Saying we need more actors in something because they are black is in fact racist itself!

It's not rascism to want more people of color in bigger roles. The majority of power roles are given to whites from whites. Power plus prejudice equals rascism. If a person is not in a position of power than it is simply a matter of prejudice. There's no such thing as a reversal in this dominant to subservient power structure that has existed in America since white European colonial expansion. There is also no such thing as reverse rascism, only racist people in a position of power to keep the systems oppressive. Case in point, mostly all the big Hollywood budget shows in the U.S.

I am responding to Lenir. And you are voting for Democrats because...? They have kept you down the most by brainwashing you and putting you back on the plantation. As you called them, "people of color" have dug their own hole. But you always look to white people to dig you out...hmmm... And who is discriminating here? Get the chip off your shoulder and realize there is more out there than the narrow passage you have chosen to go down.

Lenir:typical feedback, blame the white blah blah blah. If I wanted to act in Nigeria I would be last in line and last time I checked all races can be racist. If you think otherwise, you need to get out more dude

I agree. White washing is a very real thing. People of color need representation...we are extremely under represented. #OscarsSoWhite #MediaSoWhite #Whitewashing. I'd love to see more representation for people of color, not as thugs or slaves or savages. But a true representation of us as people, without suppressing our voices and our rich cultural history.

I agree with you. The media should reflect reality if it is a contemporary story, and a lot of times it hasn't...
