During that time in Britain, such displays of affection on the small screen were rare. The play was televised live on ITV, airing just that once. And according to the British Film Institute, this isn't just Britain's first interracial TV kiss - it could possibly be the world's first. Here is the short clip of the kiss...

The Star Trek interracial kiss has widely been credited as America's first interracial kiss on TV. UK's first interracial TV kiss was previously an embrace between actors John White and Joan Hooley on "Emergency Ward 10" in 1964. But this new footage - uncovered in the BFI's National Archive was found during research for an upcoming event on race and romance in TV - changes this.
