Barack Obama gets "choked up" while presenting Ellen DeGeneres with Presidential Medal of Freedom
President Barack Obama gave out his last ever Presidential Medals last night, and admittedly got a little “choked up” when presenting chat show host and comedienne Ellen DeGeneres with her Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest honor that can be awarded to a civilian, and is given to people who have made a positive change to the United States, either through contributions to world peace, culture, and any other national interest.
“In a career spanning three decades, Ellen DeGeneres has lifted our spirits and brought joy to our lives as a stand-up comic, actor and television star,” President Obama said. "At a pivotal moment, her courage and candor helped change the hearts and minds of millions of Americans, accelerating our nations constant drive towards equality and acceptance for all."

“It’s easy to forget now when we’ve come so far, where now marriage is equal under the law, just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages almost 20 years ago. Just how important it was. Not just to the LGBT community, but for all of us.”
Ellen counters what too often divides us, with the countless things that bind us together, inspires us to be better, one joke, one dance at a time.”
We urge you to watch the video of his speech and dare you not to get a little teary eyed…
Other well-known honourees included Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jordan, Bill and Melinda Gates, and Tom Hanks, among others.
