6 budget-friendly date ideas for newlyweds

It's Friday night and you're ready to head out on the town for a much-deserved date night. The only problem is your bank account is on the small side, and you don't want to jeopardize your rent payment for night on the town.

Fortunately, there are a variety of low cost date night ideas that are fun and romantic - and don't involve hanging out on the couch in your sweatpants.

Look for the Big Dipper

Head outside with a blanket and your smartphones to spend some time stargazing. Have a contest to see who can spot The Big Dipper or Orion's Belt first - the winner gets treated to ice cream. Download a free app that identifies the heavenly bodies in the sky; for example, Star and Planet Finder will tell you if that itty bitty red dot in the sky is really Mars - just point your phone at the sky to find out.

Go throw some darts

Instead of spending half your salary on an expensive wine bar, you head to a local dive bar and quaff a couple of beers? Challenge each other to a game of darts or pool and bring along a few singles for the jukebox - the winner gets to pick the songs.

Set up a nighttime picnic

You don't have to leave your home for a romantic date night. If you have a pool, set up a blanket and pillows on the deck and bring out your favorite takeout pizza, a bottle of wine and a container of ice cream with two spoons. To set the mood, add some floating candles in the water - Ambience Floating Candles are only $6.99 for a two-pack. The candles come in a variety of colors and the flickering lights will help set the mood.

Take a fitness class

Many gyms and fitness studios offer free or discounted classes to potential new members. If you and your honey love working out together and have always wanted to give CrossFit, water aerobics or Zumba a try, call around to see what's available. After an evening working out together, head back home and relax on the couch with a bowl of air-popped pop corn and catch up on some of your favorite shows.

Go roller skating

If your town has an indoor roller rink, channel your former middle school self and try a couple of hours of roller skating. Challenge each other to participate in the cheesy-but-oh-so-fun contests like the Chicken Dance on Skates and the Hokey Pokey. If you get hungry, treat your significant other to a slice of pepperoni pizza from the snack bar or grab sandwiches and sodas on the way home.

Volunteer together

A wonderful way to spend time together is to volunteer for one of your favorite causes. Serve dinner at a soup kitchen, or see if your local nursing home has any evening volunteer opportunities. If you can postpone your date "night"; until a weekend morning or afternoon, you will find even more chances to help others; for example, search for local dog rescues and see who is having an adopt-a-thon; they are often looking for folks to come by and help walk dogs.

Try these out and let us know if these are fun ideas that we should all consider when on a budget.
